Just hearing the term venomous snakes, instills fear in even the bravest of us, no matter how hard we try to convince ourselves we aren’t afraid of them. So what is it about these poisonous snakes that scare us so much, is it the fact that some of them can swallow us whole, strangle us or even kill us with a single bite due to their venom being that toxic? I am pretty certain it is all of these things, plus I am sure the movie portrayals of these snakes though true don’t help much either in curbing our fears.
Though being bitten, being swallowed whole or being paralyzed by a snake is very scary and very real, the chances, of that happening in the United States is much lesser than in India or Pakistan. Venomous snakes tend to thrive in tropical conditions, so there are much more deaths from snake bites in the tropical countries as opposed to the United States. In the States dying from a medical condition or an automobile accident is a more real possibility.
According to Encyclopedia Britannia, there are nine of the deadliest and most venomous snakes that can kill instantly. The black mamba, commonly found in the African savannah, possesses very strong venom that can kill instantly. The snake’s name is due to the fact that the color of the inside of its mouth is much darker than the rest of its body. In spite of being deadly, this venomous snake is only responsible for a few deaths as it only attacks when provoked. In central America, there are certain aggressive snakes that can cause unspeakable pain as well when bitten, they are known as the barba amarilla.
Another poisonous snake is the boomslang snake of Africa, this snake bites its victims till the venom takes over their bodies, only then does it eat them. The eastern tiger snake of Australia is very similar to the much feared cobra as before it attacks its victim it levels its head and chest. The most common killer among all the poisonous snakes is the saw-scaled viper, but surprise, surprise its venom is not lethal in most of its victims. This snake strikes early and often, that’s why it’s the most feared. This next snake’s venom induces paralysis; a relative of the cobra the ‘banded krait’ is also very toxic. The next two snakes are the most commonly heard of and most feared of, the king cobra and the coastal taipan, have such lethal venom it induces almost immediate paralysis and causes fatalities in most untreated cases. The world’s most deadly snake is the inland or western taipan, its venom causes paralysis and stops breathing in its victims.
Venomous snakes are found everywhere and they are feared for a reason, so the next time, if you ever encounter one, if not sure just run. Wikipedia lists more facts about venomous snakes.
